The defendant confessed to 17 criminal counts at the courthouse on Friday

A man who laced treats with tranquilliser and distributed them to youngsters at a summer program in the region has admitted sexual crimes against two children who were between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight youngsters and a grown-up became sick at Stathern Lodge in the summer month.

The 76-year-old, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, admitted guilt to a series of 17 offences when he stood at the courthouse on the end of the week.

However, he disputed one of the sexual offences he was charged with, which was involving a nine-year-old boy.

The accused was remanded in custody prior to a additional proceeding on November 28th.

'Candy game'

Mary Prior KC, presenting evidence, detailed the defendant's actions to the legal proceedings.

She explained his those affected were under-privileged children who were staying at a summer program which he ran.

The man played a "candy game" with the children, Mrs Prior explained, in which he would enter the boys' rooms when they were getting ready for bed and request they to ingest treats "rapidly".

She informed the proceedings the man had played this game with the children "over an extended period", and children had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She explained Ruben had been successful in rationalizing this repeatedly as the minors being "overexcited from fun", until his stepchild had suspicions in summer 2025.

The legal representative added: "Recently" his stepchild had suspicions about what was going on, justifiably.

"They decided to investigate in the individual's items."

Mrs Prior KC explained materials including baby oil, ointment and medical needles were located, and his family member alerted the law enforcement about his worries.

She said the defendant continued to play the "candy game" with six boys that time - that Saturday - and they were all sick the next day.

"Authorities" had not arrived by that point," she added.

The oversight body, the investigative body, had stated that it was examining law enforcement's management of the events.

The legal representative explained the children were struggling to walk due to their condition, so Ruben's stepson notified the authorities a second time.

She stated the man then conducted the "sweet game" in a room of five children.
